I’m at Starbucks (where dreams come true!) and using my netbook to access this site. I just realized that one can’t even see the background on a small screen. I’m not sure if I am relieved or bummed about that.
I’ve been cruising the internets looking at other artist portfolio websites. It occurs to me that mine is pretty simple compared to some. There are some really beautiful designs out there (I will update this post and link to them when I’m at home).
Don’t get me wrong – I like simple. I dig minimalism. Clean lines, whitespace, dark text on white. That’s my style. And right now my goal is to get something up that supports the content. But man, I feel inspired. The web is an amazing medium for design.
Of course that brings up the whole “art vs design” conversation. “Design is not art, blah blah blah.” I will leave that for the academics. I am a maker of cool stuff.
Making a website or painting a picture or drawing on a napkin or writing a story… It’s all the same process for me.
I remember sitting at the table at my grandmother’s house when I was about six years old, with the Sunday comics open, very carefully attempting to copy the Peanuts characters. Then I would hand them to my grandmother all proud and she would put them on the fridge, with a magnet.
Then I grew up and I have taken lots of art classes including very expensive classes at my very expensive art school and honestly, the process hasn’t changed much at all. Make cool stuff, show it off. Look what I did.
Anyway – I’ve got another project going on, a website for a friend’s business. Pretty exciting stuff.
Oh and I got the Akismet stuff sorted. Spammers, begone!
